Fuel requirements - Intelligent manual transmission

You see technology can confuse you at times. Currently available in the Venue and soon in the Kia Sonet as well, iMT is the next big gearbox technology in Indian cars after the AMT automated manual transmission that was initially made popular by Maruti Suzuki.

The engine can be started only when the gearbox is in neutral, with the brake pedal pressed. Once it starts, you shift to first gear, release the brake and the car will start to move, gradually.

If you press on the accelerator the car will pick up speed. Once the desired RPM is reached, release the accelerator pedal and shift to the second gear, and so on. There is no clutch pedal. You can also upshift or downshift with the accelerator pedal pressed, but that would require a slight amount of extra force while shifting gears.

Share -. Hyundai has just released details of a new gearbox option for the Venue. While an automated manual transmission AMT and an iMT are both regular manual gearboxes, in an AMT, the actuators and motors change gears and operate the clutch for you.

Software, of course, governs when and how the shifts happen. In an iMT, on the other hand, the software and actuators only control the clutch while you have to manually shift gears.

Thus, in situations like coming down a slope or overtaking, you have full control over the gearbox and you know the car will not second guess you.

And this is of course without the headache of operating the clutch. Another advantage is that by using fewer parts than an AMT as there are no actuators for the gears required , the cost of an iMT is also closer to that of a regular manual. Yes it will. However, as the iMT uses the same gear shift pattern as a standard manual gearbox, it'll be familiar and help keep track of the gear you're in; the software won't change gears on its own either so you are always in control.

In an AMT or regular auto, you could lose track of the gears while manually shifting via the plus-minus lever or the paddles, especially if the gear-changing software second guesses you and shifts automatically.

You drive it just like a manual; shift gears when you need to. Not really. To start engine, press the brake pedal and the shift lever at neutral position. The driver can operate the vehicle on the flat ground when the gear is in first or second but the following warning message appears if the driver tries to operate when the gear is put in above third. It is possible to drive on a slope with the gear is in first but the following warning message appears when the driver operates while the gear is in above second.

The Intelligence behind the iMT Now that you know what an iMT basically is, the next question is how exactly does the system work? The Advantages of using an iMT It is clear that with the iMT, the driver is relieved of clutch operation especially in bumper to bumper traffic in the city, thus making your drive comfortable and hassle free.

Here are the cars available in India that come with an iMT gearbox: Vehicle. Price ex-showroom. Hyundai Venue. Kia Sonet. Hyundai i Hyundai i20 N-Line. Kia Seltos. Related Articles.

How does it work? - Intelligent manual transmission

With the iMT gearbox, gears are changed seamlessly without the need of pressing the clutch paddles, through intelligent software and actuators that virtually press the clutch paddle, while you manually shift the gear.❿     ❿
